The term generative can refer to a process that is executed computationally. Based on a set of rules and parametric changes, outputs are generated iteratively. Outputs here can be of many types and origins.

In this workshop we have focus on typography as an output informed and transformed by code and change over time.

How can we build systems in code to create generative type? Through a series of exercises exploring the generative, dynamic and playful potential of type, we have created a series of digital outputs presented in this online showcase.

Wavey

Immersed in the essence of the ever-changing seascape, 'Wavey' draws inspiration from the fluidity and rhythmic waves found within the ocean. The letters mirrors the dynamic movements of water, capturing the ebb and flow of tides. Every letter in 'Wavey' becomes a vessel of expression, transcending its conventional static form to become a dynamic entity in motion. The curves and contours of each letter fluidly intertwine with one another, seamlessly mimicking the graceful undulations of seawater. This intentional fusion of typography and natural fluidity results in a captivating visual representation of the seamless connection between language and the organic, ever-changing patterns of the sea. The letterforms of this sketch evoke the mesmerizing qualities of seas beauty, as the letters flow and intertwine akin to the sinuous movements of seaweed in the ocean currents.

Sketches

As someone who has zero to no knowledge on p5.js, I definitely had my fair share of struggles during the past few weeks of this generative type workshop. One of the biggest struggles for me was trying to understand the code. I had to take things at my slower pace and learn to have patience so as to achieve better results. Despite the challenges I faced, I found this workshop to be both interesting and resourceful, and it has also heightened my interest in creative coding. Overall, it was a nice experience.
